Frank McClure, Sculptor
I work with wood, but not the wood most people see. I work with wood as the skeletal remains of a living tree. The product of both the genetic makeup and the environmental forces that shape the trees life.
Wood is a unique medium in that the living tree has already started the creative process. The environmental forces that existed during its lifetime leave lasting evidence in its structural form.
I strive to give these forces a voice in what and how I create. I feel fortunate to have their help in what I do.
Hawaiiana
These photos represent my interpretations of articles of Hawaiian culture. Research as well as the actual process of creating have led me to a much deeper understanding of the role of wooden objects in the traditional Hawaiian life.
